My 2023 Music Highlights
My Apple Music Replay
Putting aside the streaming platform debate for a second (I’ve used both Spotify & Apple Music), I think it’s great that these platforms give us end-of-year metrics to reflect on and even question some underlying habits (don’t be a closet fan). My personal metrics didn’t surprise me overall, but it prompted me to shed light on select artists and albums – the best of the year along with some that may have gone under the radar.
Brakence - hypochondriac
Technically, this was released in December 2022, but it’s so late into the year that I think most of its value resides in 2023. When I think of the genre Hyperpop, I think of Brakence manipulating electric guitars and drums to compliment his anxiety-induced thoughts and his internal battle with relationships, success, and himself. His vocal maturity is astounding, and I love that he wasn’t afraid to experiment with his sound to create whatever vision he intended. My pick - venus fly trap.
Nilüfer Yanya - PAINLESS (Deluxe Edition)
Another technicality, but this album was such a breath of fresh air and one of the most complete works I heard this year. Nilüfer’s effortless delivery over loud-quiet guitars showcased her emotional range in a way that felt authentic – like a warm spring afternoon spent reflecting on life. My pick - the dealer.
Drake - For All The Dogs/Scary Hours Edition
To all the ladies wonderin' why
Drake can't rap like that same old guy
It's 'cause I don't know how anymore
I don't know how
Drake has continued to evolve his music to match the changes of society, all while delivering some of his most impressive verses yet. This album was one that got better with each listen, not to mention the additional six tracks courtesy of the Scary Hours III EP. There’s a song on this album for everyone, if you’re willing to listen. My pick - All The Parties.
Travis Scott - UTOPIA
Five years after ASTROWORLD, Travis had plenty of expectations to live up to, and he mostly delivered on this project. While I don’t think UTOPIA achieved the same monumental heights as ASTROWORLD, it showcased Travis’ ability to convey a consistent idea and sound across the entirety of a project, and give fans of varying interests something to walk away with. My pick - FE!N.
Hotel Ugly - Ugly Duck
There’s something about this sound and production that feels fun to listen to. I won’t hesitate to host a personal concert if I hear a Hotel Ugly song come on. My pick - To be, or not to be ugly.
Gunna - a Gift & a Curse
Some artists either crumble amidst intense pressure and scrutiny or rise above it. Gunna put himself in the latter category with his latest album, showcasing the limitless talent pool he can pull from when it comes to creating hits. My pick - fukumean.
Dave & Central Cee - Split Decision EP
A dynamic duo, complementing each other’s styles like Yin and Yang. This EP was quick and straight to the point, delivering both catchy chorus’ and insightful bars as these two artists reflect on life before fame as well as the craze of life post-fame. My pick - Trojan Horse.
