WWDC 24 Recap

AI is Coming to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Helping you to write emails, proofread essays, and generate summaries, the newly announced Apple Intelligence is a generative AI model that will be built into your device and work across virtually all apps. Siri benefits from this new integration, allowing it to better understand contextual conversations and complete tasks across multiple applications. Apple also announced a partnership with OpenAI to utilize ChatGPT 4o natively through Siri - no account or app necessary. If you’re curious about what all this means for you, here are some examples & a couple of demos:

  • Rewrite, proofread, and summarize text automatically

  • Generate illustrations with your face, and custom emojis

  • Prioritize notifications

  • Magically erase people/objects from photos

  • Record calls and have them automatically summarized

The Caveat: Apple Intelligence will only be coming to devices with the M1 processor or later, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro.

Prediction: Apple Intelligence will become a major selling point this fall for the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro because most users won’t have access to these shiny new AI features otherwise. If you wanna play, be ready to pay.

New Home Screen, New You

Customization is a big part of iOS and iPadOS 18, allowing you to place apps anywhere on your Home Screen, lock apps, and even hide apps of your choosing in a new hidden folder. You’ll also be able to coordinate all your apps to a color scheme of your choosing.

iPad Gets a Calculator App, 14 Years Later

And it’s actually great. It serves as another example of AI making its way into the Apple ecosystem. Using machine learning in Notes, your iPad can recognize equations as you write them and solve them in real-time, in your handwriting.

Disclaimer: It can’t do calculus. Bummer.

You Can Mirror Your iPhone on Your Mac

macOS Sequoia will allow you to wirelessly cast your iPhone to your Mac and navigate with your mouse and keyboard. Best of all, you can drag and drop files across devices. Your phone will remain locked or in standby mode if docked, and all notifications will show up on your Mac, so there’s no need to jump back and forth between devices to stay up to date.
